Persil explores the spiritual concept of cleansing. The artworks make reference to its different interpretations, which are taken from human gestures and objects that are symbiotically linked to acts of purification. Soft sculptures of meditating revolutionary and religious icons carved out from blocks of detergent bar soaps represent mankind’s interest in salvation. Toilet room accessories and paraphernalia for hygiene and sanitation are also presented to serve as metaphors within the sites where domestic purification rituals occur. The artist’s intention is to dialogue with the public regarding assumptions about “purity” and other values that they may attach to or associate with the artist’s works.
