The SPECIAL CONCERT SERIES features outstanding young Filipino artists in solo concerts. It highlights local and international prize winners in vocal and instrumental music and artists with performing careers abroad. The program seeks to get the general public and the youth to watch and appreciate classical music and be exposed to dynamic young Filipino artists who are making a mark on the classical music scene.

Triple Fret is a classical contemporary guitar trio consisting of Jenny De Vera, Iqui Vinculado, and Marga Abejo, all graduates of the premier music schools in the country, namely the University of the Philippines College of Music and the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music. They have attended master classes under David Russell, Carlos Bonnell, Rafael Serrallet, Carsten Linck, Lester Demetillo, and other influential guitarists.

The only all-female guitar trio of its kind in the country, Triple Fret stands out with their extensive repertoire of Spanish guitar pieces, tangos, jazz standards, Filipino traditional, love songs and well-loved classical pieces, all infused with a style uniquely their own. In 2014, the group released their first independent album entitled “#GITARA FILIPINA” which was launched in a sold out concert in the Ayala Museum. The CD contains special arrangements of Filipino folk songs as well as baroque, classical, and contemporary pieces.

The trio was awarded first prize in the Guitar Ensemble Category in the 2014 Tarrega Malaysia International Festival in Malaysia. In 2015, they were again awarded First Prize at the 27th Japan Guitar Ensemble Festival in Shinagawa, Tokyo.  Recently, the guitarists were recipients of the 2016 National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Ani ng Dangal for Music. The group has been travelling to Europe and Asia giving concerts in the Netherlands, Spain, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Turkey and Japan. The trio’s   most distinguished performances in Europe include the Tong Tong Fair (the biggest Eurasian trade fair in the world, Malieveld Park, The Hague (Netherlands), the SOL Guitars Festival (La Beneficencia Hall, Valencia, Spain) and at the Guitarra Festival (Siguenza, Spain) in honor of the world renowned luthier Jose Romanillos. The guitarists also performed for the Syrian children refugees in the Syrian Refugee Camp in Kilis, Turkey.

Triple Fret continues to stay committed and inspired ever more to share their gift and love for guitar music with as many people as they can, to transcend barriers of social class, educational background, culture, creed and religion, to truly bring the joy of music to all.

For this second instalment of the Special Concert Series, Jeffrey Malazo takes the place of Triple Fret member Marga Abejo.
